mud

Today on NPR there was a report from York, England of the discovery of what are believed to be the remains of Roman gladiators from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Interestingly, the gladiators had been decapitated because the remains were found with the skulls between their knees. Apparently, ancient Brits did not take kindly to being invaded. To heck with the new roads and sewer systems.

I thought of this story as I walked to carpool this morning, and wondered what might be buried hundreds of feet underground, in my neighborhood: an hunter-gatherer teen wearing baggy mastodon-skin trousers, or a prehistoric woman with a stone-age baby jogger? Naw, there's probably just mud.

  1. May be a couple of Oakland school superintendents down there in the mud too, as well as mile-thick layers of ancient goose poop.

    BTW, loved the Moocher.

  2. Indeed! Yep, The Moocher is a good boy. I met him during my March visit. Apparently he snores and breaks wind in his sleep, but is otherwise a fine companion.
